Vicente Guerrero
Representatives from Providence Road and a few other churches, including North Raleigh church of Christ, meet up in San Diego and travel as a mission team to Vicente Guerrero, Baja, California. Mission teams lead worship meetings with bible classes for everyone, each evening. During the day, we provide a staffed medical clinic with basic over-the-counter medicines and sometimes dental attention or haircuts with lice treatment. On our last trip, we were able to "go mobile" and travel to a nearby Trique village, and two other off-site locations, and serve people who had no means to come to the clinic at the church building. A mission trip will also usually include construction projects at the church building or the daycare center which is currently under construction, and/or necessary home repairs for church families or frequent visitors.
Possibly the most appreciated service are the groceries we purchase, which are delivered on behalf of the local congregation, to some of its members in need as well as to some folks from the community who have visited the church. When the groceries are delivered, we have a time of prayer and encouragement, and sometimes singing, with each family.
Gerardo and Beatriz Figueroa have been serving the congregation in Vicente Guerrero since 2000, in which time the Lord’s kingdom has increased with multiple baptisms. Our family there very much looks forward to our visits, not only because of the assistance we provide, but also for the spiritual nourishment that our presence, encouragement and teaching, brings. Over the years, we have grown in our relationships with the church in Vicente Guerrero, as well as with our brothers and sisters from Newburgh, Indiana, and others from various cities in the U.S., who have joined in this work.
On your first trip you learn that the real blessing is not what you take to them, but what you receive in the process. We are assisted by wonderful translators, some local, some provided by Baja Missions, and some from the states, so don’t let your inability to speak Spanish hinder you from going! At times when we cannot understand each other, as one brother said to us, “We can see how you feel.”
The next scheduled trip is January 14-18th, 2010. There is also a week-long trip scheduled for July 17-24th, 2010. If you would like information about either trip, contact Kelli Randolph. If you'd like to support Baja Missions any way, contact Kelli Randolph or John Webster.
